Racism is alive and well - Lutherans MUST NOT tolerate it

Can you imagine what would happen if more Lutheran men were in prison than were in college?

In our country in 2011, there are more black men in prison than in college. This is an outrage!! Yet our church is virtually silent on the matter.

When a black pastor, Reverend Jeremiah Wright, spoke out and screamed "God DAMN America," he was castigated. I agree with reverend Wright. God should damn America for allowing this to happen. Make no mistake, this outrage was well planned and executed by white people.

We Lutherans are white people and it is our great shame that we stood by and allowed this to happen. In some cases, I am sure that we Lutherans participated in this outrage.

In 2003, I wrote an op-ed that was published in the Houston Chronicle - see  the top of this blog. In that piece, I wrote about another outrageous example of racism.

I am using very strong language but if we Lutherans are to be relevant in the 21st century we must speak loudly and clearly on behalf of the poor and oppressed.
